i don't know if you want advice at all so if i'm overstepping at all i'm sorry. i just recently lost someone and you're right in that there isn't really anything good to say. the best you can probably do is remind him that you're there for him and that it's ok for him to grieve and to take time for himself. all you can really do is be honest with him and validate him. i've never been in your position but this is probably hard for you as well. remember to care for yourself too
